The “Diverse As This Land” Project

The Diverse As This Land project explores how land shapes vocal and cultural expression and reveals the dynamic spectrum of Indigenous music today. The nature of land and the diversity within Aboriginal cultures is the inspiration behind Diverse as This Land, a seven-year music project envisioned bySandra Laronde, director of Aboriginal Arts at The Banff Centre.

This week-long voice intensive workshop enables participants to explore singing as physical experience, breath control and capacity, resonance, understanding of the vocal apparatus, care of the voice, relationship to space and audience, and personal expression through interpretation of song. The voice intensive workshop will provide singers with technical training under the mentorship of two highly accomplished vocal instructors.

A unique feature of this project is the opportunity for voice intensive participants to participate in theDiverse As This Land public concert series which features established Indigenous musicians. Artists experience first-hand the power of live performance by singing as a group during the concert series. This year’s concerts will showcase the vast character of woodland songs from a diversity of Indigenous nations representing traditional, rock, folk, and contemporary musicals genres, each influenced by their distinct cultures.

Enrolment is limited to 12 participants of Aboriginal descent who are 18 years and older.

2012 Prophecies and Vision

The world that we know seems to be changing before our eyes. But our ancestors and seers all over the world have prophecized a time of great change.

A legend from the Inca and other Indigenous nations talk of a time when the Eagle and the Condor meet and fly together. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKOruXybapo)

The Maya, masters of Astronomy tell of a new epoch or a new time. They say we are leaving the 5th Age and entering the Age of the 6th Sun. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwysQiRaRgE&feature=related)

The late Lakota elder Mr. Floyd Crow Westerman speaks of a time of cleansing and renewal.

One common thread in many of these prophecies is the need to realize the interconnected nature of reality.

As Indigenous people have stated many times,” We all are one.” What we we do to others we also do to ourself. What we do to Mother Earth we also do to ourselves.
